The MEV eliminates utility charges for any volume of air naturally present in your water by compressing that air, so the majority of it is immeasurable.
Over the years, there have been a number of valves on the market, but the older ‘first-generation’ valves were not externally adjustable which is important to maximize savings after installation. Although second and third-generation valves are similar, the ‘third-generation’ produces better results especially in buildings with higher or lower incoming water pressure, zones, or with sensitive equipment.
The reason the third-generation valve performs better is that it does not restrict water flow. Older valves reduce water flow and therefore savings. (Example a 4″ valve is reduced to 1.9″).

A second-generation valve was initially installed but due to the high incoming PSI achieved only 7% savings set with the maximum adjustment allowable without creating water pressure issues. While there are custom solutions addressing metering accuracy, there are no other pressure adjustable, single-point-of-Installation solutions on the market currently that do not restrict water flow and that does not potentially cause grounding issues.
How much you will save depends on how much turbulence is in your water, which is impossible to measure but 20% is very typical. How much the valve can be adjusted to maximize savings also depends on your equipment or booster pump specifications and your incoming PSI.

HOW DO METER EFFICIENCY VALVES WORK?
The technology used in achieving such substantial savings is “hydraulic intensification” where a column of water is pressurized against the incoming flow of water. This action produces a shockwave traveling back over the water meter reducing the size of the entrapped air to an undetectable volume, in addition to taking turbulent flow and rendering it laminar. In combination, these actions reduce the consumption reading of the meter to only read a true, solid column of water without air or turbulence.
